The developments of the DisComPoSE Project research will be presented during the second national conference of the Italian Society of Environmental History (SISAM), titled Italian Environmental History from Ancient to Contemporary Times: Themes, Sources, and Methods, which will be held in Naples at the Department of Humanities of the University of Naples Federico II.

On September 26th 2024 at 5:00 p.m., in the Aula Gentile located at Via Porta di Massa 1, a thematic session titled Environment, Religiosity, and Communication in the Christian World of the Modern Era: Natural Disasters, Memory, and Religious Knowledge will take place.

The session, chaired by Elisabetta Bini (University of Naples “Federico II”), will feature contributions from the following members of the DisComPoSE research group:

  • Beatriz Álvarez García (Complutense University of Madrid)
    Hell on Earth: Interpretations, Representations, and Memory of Nature in Seventeenth-Century Spanish Sacred Oratory
  • Umberto Signori (University of Pavia)
    Memories of Saints and Heroes: The Eruptions of Monte Nuovo (1538) and Vesuvius (1631) Between Natural Phenomenon and Divine Punishment
  • Domenico Cecere (University of Naples “Federico II”)
    Religious Institutions Facing Disasters in Seventeenth-Century Ecuador: Knowledge of the Territory, Recent Experiences, and Mythical Memories
  • Yasmina Ben Yessef (University of Naples “Federico II”)
    God, the Devil, and Nature: Empiricism and Providentialism in the Interpretation of American Volcanism in Religious Texts (17th-18th Centuries)

The event is free and open to the public. No registration is required to attend the conference sessions.
